Song 05 // Taking Back Sunday - "There's No 'I' In Team"
Well I can't regret
Can't you just forget it?
I started something I couldn't finish
And if we go down, we go down together
Best friends means
Well best friends means
It was undoubtedly a challenge to narrow down one song from Taking Back Sunday’s discography for this week’s songs for your mixtape. The band burst out in the Long Island scene and their music became seminal works in the 2000s wave of emo. Their early albums were packed with genre classics and plenty of songs ending in anxious screaming.
“There’s No ‘I’ In Team” feels like diving headfirst into the zeitgeist of the 2000s. A time when the Internet wasn’t fully realized as the capitalistic and corporate-washed version it is today. When raw, angsty live journals were meticulously penned and almost overnight everyone had a myspace.
And I've got a twenty-dollar bill
That says you're up late night starting
Fist fights vs. fences in your backyard
Wearing your black eye like a badge of honor
Taking Back Sunday would go on to influence a whole wave of emo bands that would later be discovered through myspace. What makes this song so captivating is that it captured a notorious feud that spanned across songs and albums. While the lyrical content of most emo songs negatively depicted women, the subject of this song would be spun seventy times seven times as the feud with Brand New would continue into both bands’ next albums. Only fitting for a time when splintered feelings and rash emotions were being hashed out on myspace profiles and picture comments.
Don't believe me when I tell you
"it's something unforgivable"
And for those who saw the band live or through grainy recordings online — mics are for swinging.
