Song 07 // KennyHoopla - "how will i rest in peace if i’m buried by a highway?//"
She's gonna cut my head off
But I don't care, I don't care
She's gonna cut my head off
But I don't care
Take an indie-filled iPod, circa mid-2000s, and put it on shuffle. Then mash it together with the current sounds in indie rock, hip hop, and chillwave. The result is the new nostalgic music of KennyHoopla. At a time when genre blending has produced some of the most interesting music, KennyHoopla’s take on it exudes nostalgic vibes.
Culture is so claustrophobic
Claws to prove it hurts so good
And the party's over
I'm still on your couch now, love
“how will i rest in peace if i’m buried by a highway?//” is the reimagined indie track from his EP of the same name. A song that could easily fit on a playlist with the likes of Bloc Party and Klaxons but can still bring something fresh to the stage.
Similar to how the indie music of the 2000s was driven and influenced by internet culture, so does the music of KennyHoopla. Except this time it feels more accessible. Maybe that’s because we have direct access to artists’ thoughts and postings via Twitter or maybe it’s just the Spongebob references. Either way, it’s refreshing to have an artist put their vulnerabilities and emotions at the forefront.
They say, "You clean up nice
You look like a dead man
Like a dead man"
There’s an impending urgency to the song that kicks in during the chorus and matches the lyrics. A frantic beat that pushes you toward the dance floor — as if this is the only song that matters — and demands the song be played again.
How can I rest in peace if I'm buried by a highway?
Pain on the keys, is everybody still breathing?
Weight of my shadow, it gets more heavy
And it scares me, yeah
