Song 10 // daine - "Picking Flowers"
Pushing back and fighting memories
I never wanted an ending like this
I never wanted
Hospital bedsheets
The nights are getting longer in this everlasting year. But this time the darkness seems more haunting than ever. It’s fitting that the evocative and brooding melodies from daine's “Picking Flowers” conjures the desolate mood of not only the season but the year in general.
daine is a new artist gaining traction through a new found fandom including the likes of Charli XCX. Her sound converges on the realms of melancholic melodies twisting various genres together in what publications and blogs have labeled as “dark pop.” However, there’s so much more to this.
I tried my best to be all you need
I thought I was rotting in the dark
I was planted below to grow high and far
The demons keep me in
But I still float away
I was meant for sunsets in a greener place
She started writing music after being inspired by the hardcore and emo scenes. The inspiration seeps through in her lyrics and confessional nature — think Tigers Jaw or Basement but through a modern lens of DIY production.
You don't gotta talk I don't want you to cry
Will you hit my line later tonight
I hate the way we say goodbye
I forget my life like all the time
The song starts off with a riff that provides the audio motif for the song as layer upon layer brings together the dark, goth-tinged sound. In interviews daine states the song was created in the midst of a breakup. This is apparent as the aforementioned melody takes on a ghostly feeling — the death of a relationship — that continues to haunt the listener in its continued looping form.
Pushing back and fighting memories
I never wanted an ending like this
Did I find some hope in my old dreams
I lost you to feeling like I was at peace
The song ends abruptly at just over two and a half emotive minutes but the feeling of being lost in a haunted forest remains.
