Song 16 // Charly Bliss - "Percolator"
Come on, baby, get me high
There's always something new to buy
I cry all the time, I think that it's cool
I'm in touch with my feelings
There are certain songs that beg you to jump around the moment you hear them, grab a guitar and play it as fast as you can, and quite plainly, scream the lyrics as loud as you can. “Percolator” is one of those songs that fits this category.
The song is the opening track from the debut album, “Guppy” (2017), by Charly Bliss and an overall great introduction to the band. The song starts off with a straightforward guitar and drum beat that comes to a short pause before imploding into the pop-punk, garage rock sound the band is known for. A match that ignites us headfirst into screeching, distorted guitars alongside crashing cymbals.
I am pregnant with meaning
Could I be more appealing
Writing slurs on the ceiling
Come on, baby, you're bleeding
Cutting above the melodic cacophony, as well as her own guitar, is Eva Hendricks’ singing and yelling. The lyrics combine the best of pure, blissful fun and sharp-witted sarcasm to craft an alt-rock pop song. It’s also the way Hendricks sings as she lingers on certain words for a note that add to the catchiness of the song. The result is an album opener full of self-declarative pride while ousting societal expectations.
“My whole life, I’ve had to hear ‘Eva, you’re being too nice, everyone is going to think you’re flirting with them,’” she says. “Those lyrics—that’s me taking all those things people have said about me and spitting them back out and saying, ‘Fuck you.’” - Eva Hendricks (Source: Bandcamp interview).
I'm not scared to lick the floor
Cause I have sucked on something worse
Straight from the adored, myself over yours?
C'mon, baby, keep dreaming
Don't you know I aim to please?
I'm everybody's favorite tease
Put your hand on my knee, that's what friends are for
“Percolator”, along with the rest of the record, captures the energetic spirit of the band’s live shows — it’s contagious. The music from Charly Bliss reminds me that, despite the times we’re living in, there’s still fun in the things we care about. So until we can jump around at live shows, we can blast “Percolator” and take a moment to live loudly in the present.
I'm gonna die in a getaway car
I haven't tried, but it sounds too hard
All of my friends never understand
You say that I make you feel like a man
