Song 20 // Cherub - "Doses & Mimosas"
Doses and Mimosas
Champagne and cocaine
Help to get me through
Replace “cocaine” with “vaccines” in the chorus and hence why this song by the musical duo, Cherub, is featured this week. It may feel like an odd song to celebrate getting the second shot of the vaccine but maybe because the word itself — “doses” — has been so common in our collective lexicon over the past half year that I couldn’t help but recall this catchy, electro-pop song.
Don't get me started, love
I've had too much to drink
Had too much time to think
So leave me alone
Crying when you're by yourself
Cause of what they think about you
Cherub never expected this “ridiculous” song to be a hit when it came out in 2012 but it’s become their most memorable one. The electronic pop melody provides the dance track while both members’ distinct singing styles complement each other throughout the song. As a whole, the entire song acts as a time capsule of the sound of indie dance music from the 2010s.
Something's gotta give soon
Or I'm gonna lose it
Substance abusing
And never come down, down
Fall off the deep end
And forget my English
What's the point of language
If you don't say what you feel?
“Doses & Mimosas” also brings up many strong nostalgic memories as it was a staple at indie dance parties across Los Angeles before the pandemic hit. So here’s to vaccine doses and future celebratory mimosas.
