Song 23 // Yung Lean - "Hennessy & Sailor Moon"
I-I-I love how she dancing, got me feeling for you
You say that you love me, I don't know if it's true
When I go to sleep all I ever see is you
I can be your savior, everything that we've been through
“Hennessy & Sailor Moon” drifts through your mind like a late night dream. It evokes so much softness in a lofi sound, yearning with a desire for love and to be loved in return. The song, by Swedish rapper Yung Lean, starts off with a delicate melody — electronic keyboard notes spaced apart with a certain degree of uncertainty — that echo throughout the entirety of the song. This lofi sound creates the hypnotic soundtrack that makes this song so enticing to listen to and immerse yourself into.
I love how she dancing, got me feeling for you
You say that you love me, I don't know if it's true
When I go to sleep all I ever see is you
I can be your savior, everything that we've been through
“Hennessy & Sailor Moon” displays the soft side of Yung Lean and his roots in emo rap. Yung Lean also enlists the help of fellow Swedish rapper, bladee, who vocally matches Lean’s soft singing and lyrics.
She shouldn't have to ask, whatever she wants
I stay up till dawn, barbed wire on my arm
They wanna see me fall, they wanna see me fall
I don't care at all, I'm a young rockstar
The song sounds like a dreamy love letter but filled with a tinge of doubt. A song about doing everything for someone without knowing if those feelings are fully reciprocated. Those feelings are further explored in the music video where Yung Lean, later accompanied by bladee, perform to an empty venue. Lean spilling his heart out for someone absent in his life at the moment (or as a view for his passion for music even if no one is listening).
When I was in the hospital, I saw you
I know what you feel inside cause I feel you
I gotta stay true, my money rain blue
Hennessy and Sailor Moon, I just wanna be with you
Even the lyrics of the song where the track title comes from, “Hennessy and Sailor Moon, I just wanna be with you,” display a certain affinity toward escapism and reality (as well as a reference to a past and present). Or at least an ideal reality, “I just wanna be with you.”
I know what your feelings are cause I know I feel you
My money rain blue, Hennessy and Sailor Moon
