Song 26 // Sean Nicholas Savage - "Disco Dancing"
On my feet again, down the street to look for you
And on this summer night, everything's going to be alright
And it feels like I might start to live my life
You know it's been a while since I had a good long smile
And I feel good tonight, everything's going to be alright
And it feels like I might start to live my life
It’s been a few weeks since I sent out this newsletter. For those that know me personally, my life has been at a major transition point this past month. I started grad school for filmmaking and I’ve been adjusting to my new workload and schedule. So for this newsletter, I thought I’d combine my love for filmmaking and music.
I’ve always gravitated toward filmmakers who can select the perfect song for a scene. Throughout film history there are countless memorable scenes that stay with us because of the music driving the scene forward. It’s also a chance to discover a song in a new context or hear a band for the first time, especially at a moment when we are least expecting it.
On that note, I was hooked on Sean Nicholas Savage’s “Disco Dancing” from the film, Tu Dors Nicole (You’re Sleeping Nicole). The film is about a young woman and those long summer days filled with nothing to do. The song fits in perfectly with the film because when the song is viewed in the context of the film, Savage captures the delicate line of summer boredom and teenage declaration of love.
I hear that music playing, I wanna make you hear it
I've never been in love with anyone like you before
And that song I hear, oh, was made for you and me
And disco dancing
The film’s slow and deliberate pacing matches Savage’s lo-fi singer-songwriter approach to “Disco Dancing” — carefree and filled with youthful love. The mood of the song is further reflected in Savage’s accompanying music video (it’s filled with quirky and experimental transitions and camera effects, which makes for an ultimately easygoing viewing experience).
And when I'm dreaming with you, wish you could hear what I do
I've never known the rainbow, though, the way I look at you
I feel that I do know the way that it would feel
Like disco dancing
The song has stayed with me ever since I saw Tu Dors Nicole and it has this effect of having me fall in love all over again whenever I hear the joyful and blissful lyrics.
