Song 27 // SALEM - "King Night"
I love you
This time of the year, when the nights cast their darkness earlier and earlier, I find myself listening to music that matches the shadowy mood of the night, especially when we are a few days out from Halloween. So it’s only apt that the band featured in this edition of songs for your mixtape has been regarded as pioneers within the founding of a genre dubbed, witch house.
As a band, SALEM has long been shrouded in mystery. Their unique and dark somber sound rooted in occult themes was ahead of its time when they released their debut album, King Night, in 2010.
When you listen to the entire album you’ll notice their dark electronic sound utilizes everything from slowed down and chopped hip-hop vocals, heavy use of synthesizers, punishing industrial soundscapes, and ethereal dreamy vocals pushed past the point of recognition.
The title track, and the album opener, “King Night” is a perfect introduction to the band. With a brief and haunting, “I love you,” at the beginning of the song, “King Night” sets the mood for an unhinged haunted experience. The melody will be familiar as something you’ve heard before but in a way that will take a while to make the unsettling connection. The rest of the vocals in the songs are layered deep within the soundscape to the point where they teeter on being unrecognizable.
SALEM’s music is the unnerving and ideal pairing of an ominous soundtrack played in the darkness of night.
