Song 28 // Hyd - "Skin 2 Skin"
Skin to skin
Let her in
Moisture den, succulent
Floppy bend
Heaven-sent, drip it in
Open lens
Then again, who's your friend?
Hyd’s self-titled EP was released yesterday with much anticipation for those following the PC Music label. Previously Hyd (Hayden Dunham) was the iconic cyborg, QT, in the SOPHIE and A.G. Cook produced “Hey QT” song. In Hyd’s new music, she comes forth with an entirely new artistic expression of herself and her world.
Hyd started work on her new project when she temporarily lost her vision after an eye surgery. ‘“I couldn’t look down. I was working on these massive sculptures and had an [art] install that week, so I was just feeling materials with my hands” (Nylon interview).
Cellophane, accident
Once again
Acid rain, hurricane
In the end
Permanent, light within
Ball-and-chain, document
Her temporary blindness presents itself in “Skin 2 Skin,” produced by A.G. Cook and Caroline Polachek. The soundscape of the song interweaves delicate ASMR speaking with a gossamer like chorus.
If you wanna ride on the slip and slide
Feeling kinda (Ah!), on the inside
If you wanna ride on the slip and slide
Come through, come through
The result is a heightened sense of sound and the significance of audio feedback when one’s vision is absent. Even Hyd’s “Ah!” gasps feel more urgent and pivotal, like we are gaining an insight into her new view of the world and the space she takes up in it.
Be the guy
Pick a side, gemini
Gemini
Have a cry, wipe your eye
Off my thigh
Ride or die, pillow fight
While “Skin 2 Skin” retains the familiarity we’ve come to known from PC Music, the song as well as the rest of the EP showcase Hyd’s unique artistry to create an ethereal and glimmering soundscape that will leave listeners in wonder.
