Song 35 // Caroline Kingsbury - "Kissing Someone Else"
I can see you now, you're all dressed up
Got your best shoes on
That I happened to pick out
Been moving on, you're moving on
For the past week I’ve been listening to Caroline Kingsbury’s debut album Heaven’s Just A Flight on repeat. After seeing her perform the first night of her residency at NYC’s Berlin venue, it’s clear Kingsbury has a strong stage presence and powerful voice. The entire performance had me singing along and dancing as she played hit after hit from her album.
Now don't get me wrong
Letting go was right
But I can't shake the feeling of you by my side
You're moving on, you're moving on
You're moving on
The track, “Kissing Someone Else,” is one of those absolute bangers of a song that sounds like it could have come out in the ‘80s. Each verse moves us through the song’s story and the chorus will be stuck in your head for days—in the best way possible.
I'm going out tonight
In my best bluе dress
Got my red pumps on
God, I feel depressed (Why, girl?)
Kingsbury describes her album as “the story of a queer artist from a religious family coming out, finding her people and her place” (Bandcamp). The collection of songs span genres of ‘80s new wave, post-punk, and the belting performances of glam rock filled with melodic synths and guitars. But in songs like, “Kissing Someone Else,” it’s Kingsbury’s vocals that elevate the song to another dimension.
While my newsletter focuses on single songs, I like to recommend albums as a whole especially for newer artists. If you have the chance to see Kingsbury live, then definitely do so as it’s only a matter of time until she’s playing larger stages.
I can feel your heartbeat while you're kissing someone else
You met her drinking in a dive bar asking 'bout books you've read
